Celebrating Hispanic/Latine Heritage Month at Villanova

From September 15 to October 15, we honor the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of Hispanic and Latine Americans. This month is a time to celebrate the vibrant communities that shape our society and recognize the profound impact of those whose ancestors hail from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.

Hispanic/Latine Heritage Month originated as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968 under President Lyndon Johnson, and in 1988, it was expanded to a full month by President Ronald Reagan, officially becoming law on August 17, 1988. The significance of September 15 is profound, marking the independence anniversaries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Additionally, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence on September 16 and September 18, respectively. This month also encompasses Indigenous Peoples’ Day or Día de la Raza on October 12. Alumni Spotlight: Ricaurte Vásquez Morales, PhD, Class of ’73

This month, we also celebrate the remarkable achievements of alumni like Ricaurte Vásquez Morales, PhD, a distinguished Panamanian economist and Villanova alumnus from the Class of 1973. In 2019, Dr. Vásquez took on the pivotal role of administrator of the Panama Canal, one of the world’s most crucial waterways. During his tenure, he managed unprecedented growth for the Canal, overseeing a record amount of cargo and generating $3.9 billion in revenue in just one year.

In 2022, Dr. Vásquez shared his insights during the College of Engineering’s Patrick J. Cunningham Jr. and Susan Ward ’80 Endowed Lecture Series, discussing the intricate balance of economics and engineering necessary to sustain this growth while protecting the region’s limited water supply. His leadership serves as an inspiring example of the significant impact that Hispanic and Latine individuals can have in their fields and communities.
