We are excited to shine a spotlight on the new student organization, the Association of Black Communication Students, at Villanova. Hear from founder, Glory Wells, Communication ‘25, about her vision for the organization and what they have been up to this year.
The Association of Black Communication Students is a creative collective of students with a shared passion for communication dedicated to celebrating creative talents, fostering professional development, and exploring diverse fields within the realm of communication. At its core, ABCS celebrates the richness of Black creativity, innovation, and the profound influence of Black communication across diverse fields. ABCS strives to cultivate a vibrant community that embraces the diverse interests of its members and is open to exploring the fundamental role of communication across various fields, including but not limited to sports communication, media production, entertainment, marketing, public relations, journalism, and business communication. Furthermore, ABCS aims to provide its members with a well-rounded understanding of communication, fostering versatility and empowering them to thrive in communication in a range of professional fields. This creative collective mainly serves to accentuate the talent of Black Communication students while inspiring and welcoming all students, regardless of race or ethnicity.
Glory states “I was motivated to create this organization after recognizing the need for a space dedicated to uplifting Black communication students and providing them with the resources to succeed. Seeing the absence of such an organization, I felt a strong commitment to building a vibrant community where Black communication students, and others who share this passion, can unite, grow, and thrive. Through ABCS, we aim to empower students to embrace their creativity and make meaningful contributions both on campus and beyond.”
Last October 13 ABCS members attended CultureCon, a conference for diverse creatives founded by Imani Ellis, in Brooklyn, NY., the group’s first official trip! This was more than an event; it was a chance to connect, learn, and grow within a vibrant community celebrating Black creativity, culture, and innovation. To make this event possible, Glory reached out across Villanova and secured funding from departments such as the Center for Inclusive Education, the Office of Undergraduate Students, and the Office of Student Involvement.
This semester, ABCS has a lot planned! They are excited to host a variety of communication-themed events, participate in office visits, and attend a major conference in March, along with some other exciting opportunities that ABCS can’t wait to share. Look out for them!
