So, you’ve decided you want to attend grad school…. But, when? Attending graduate school can be a transformative experience, both personally and professionally, but the timing is important to consider. It’s a good idea to look ahead and think about when graduate school feels right for you. Read below for some questions to aid in your decision making:
🎓 Do you know which degree you want?
You are not expected to know exactly which graduate degree you want to obtain right after graduating with your bachelor’s degree. Taking some time off can give you the opportunity to do some research on graduate programs and network with individuals who hold those degrees. If you know exactly what you want, attending graduate school right away might be right for you!
💼 Do you want to get more work/research experience?
Degree programs like MBAs, PhDs, MDs, etc. typically expect 1-2 years of relevant experience or volunteer hours. Taking a year or two after your undergraduate experience to gain some relevant experience in the field/lab can enhance your application and solidify your interest in pursuing the degree. Perhaps you gained relevant experience throughout your undergraduate degree… If you feel ready to apply, you absolutely should!
🕶️ Do you need a break?
Graduate school is tough. While it is certainly feasible to matriculate into a graduate program directly out of undergraduate, it can be tiring! Some students value the momentum that the quick turnarounds bring, but for others, it can be exhausting and overwhelming. Knowing what is best for you is crucial, and there is no wrong answer. This is your graduate school experience, and you get to steer the journey!
📝 Do you need to take a qualifying exam?
Let’s face it: Studying for any standardized exam (e.g., MCAT, GRE, GMAT, LSAT…) while still pursuing your undergraduate degree can be tough. Taking the opportunity to study for the exam without being distracted by your courses can be incredibly helpful. Of course, many students study for these exams while enrolled in a busy course load. Again, it’s about knowing what is best for you and your needs.
💵 Money, money, money?!
There is no hiding the fact that graduate school is expensive. Timing graduate school for your financial needs is an important aspect of the process. Giving yourself a few years to save up some money can be a good option. What’s more, some employers will support their employees’ academic degree prospects. Be sure to do your research. Financing graduate school can be daunting, but be sure to lean on resources like graduate assistantships and tuition scholarships. There are a lot of opportunities out there!
