APHL Fellowship in Radiochemistry
Location: California Department of Public Health, Richmond CA
The APHL Fellow will join the team of California radiochemists and learn essential functions and practices of public health radiochemistry laboratory. The Radiochemistry Laboratory of Drinking Water and Radiation Laboratory Branch is located in a state-of-the-art, 500,000 square foot facility located a few blocks from Richmond’s Marina Bay at the California Department of Public Health Richmond Campus. The Fellow will receive specialized training in handling environmental samples for radiological testing, chemical separation techniques, operating and maintenance of radiation counting instruments, and will gain hands-on experience in all steps of laboratory method development. The major focus of this one to two years fellowship is a project aiming to streamline laboratory’s critical soil testing capabilities by adapting new separation techniques and expanding measuring protocols to ICP-MS. In addition, the Fellow will have an opportunity to observe and engage, when possible, in all aspects of sample testing, laboratory operations and supporting laboratory mission of safeguarding California public from radiation exposure.
Day-to-day responsibilities include:
• Performing radiological analysis of soil samples using alpha spectrometry and ICP-MS.
• Conducting literature searches, preparing research plans, and performing method development and validation in compliance with all Quality Control requirements.
• Analyzing raw data, keeping thorough and detailed documentation.
• Collaborating with laboratory scientists, participating in intra-departmental collaborations such as ICP-MS method development group, and partnerships with other state public health laboratories.
• Creating project reports, presenting project results, contributing to laboratory presentations, scientific publications and development of new standard operating procedures.
• Participating in routine and emergency preparedness laboratory operations and sample testing following established protocols. Using Laboratory Information Management System for sample tracking, maintaining laboratory resources and equipment, and performing instrument calibrations and troubleshooting as necessary.
