Internship Opportunity: Behavioral Health in Urban Schools (BHUS) – Unpaid Research Administration Intern

Location: On-site at CHOP Roberts Center for Pediatric Research (Philadelphia, PA) – no remote/hybrid work permitted due to data confidentiality

Start Date: June 2025

Commitment: Summer & Fall 2025 (possibility to extend into Spring 2026)

Compensation: Unpaid (eligible for academic credit)

About Us

The Behavioral Health in Urban Schools Program (BHUS) at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) partners with schools to implement and sustain evidence-based mental health interventions for students. We work with both urban and rural school districts to improve school climate and provide support for students struggling with anger and anxiety.

Our research focuses on social and behavioral clinical trials and implementation science. This is not lab research – it’s hands-on experience in research administration, supporting the behind-the-scenes work that makes impactful studies possible.

About the Internship

This internship offers real-world experience in research administration and grants management, providing a valuable opportunity to learn how research happens behind the scenes. Interns will support projects like Project RISE (Philadelphia public schools) and Project CARE (rural Appalachia, fully remote schools).

The focus is on data entry, paperwork processing, and research operations. Interns will work on-site in a professional office setting, gaining exposure to confidential data management, IRB processes, and grants administration.

What You’ll Do

  • Enter data in REDCap and Excel
  • Process paperwork (consent forms, data collection documents)
  • Maintain participant tracking logs
  • Support documentation for IRB compliance
  • Prepare data collection materials and research documentation
  • Gain exposure to research administration, including grants and budgeting (as opportunities allow)

What You’ll Learn

  • REDCap data entry and management
  • Research ethics and IRB compliance
  • Grants administration and budgeting basics
  • Professional communication in a multidisciplinary team
  • Time management, organization, and attention to detail
  • Experience in a professional office environment

Who Should Apply

We’re looking for students who are:

  • Curious and open to learning
  • Organized and detail-oriented
  • Comfortable working within processes and protocols
  • Okay with repetitive tasks, like data entry and paperwork processing
  • Interested in mental health, education, research, grants, or administration

You’ll thrive here if you enjoy structured work, like following step-by-step processes and keeping things organized and accurate. If you’re not interested in data entry or find repetitive tasks tedious, this may not be the right fit.
