The summer intern will work on a variety of tasks in the Office of Sustainable Energy, including research, data collection, stakeholder and public engagement, and communication of findings to project partners. The Sustainable Energy program area includes several active projects and programs all with unique timelines, so the intern would have the opportunity to work on (or be exposed to) programs at different stages of implementation.

Active projects include: the Regional Climate Action Plan, the Regional Energy Transition Framework, and ongoing research on Thermal Energy Networks.

Active programs include: The Regional Energy Center, which is exploring the development of a program to support residential energy improvements; the Sustainable Energy Partnership of southeast PA, which provides support to the four collar counties in purchasing electricity and renewable energy; and the Regional Benchmarking Program, which provides a pathway to implement a benchmarking requirement for buildings in small and mid-sized municipalities in southeast PA.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct desk research in support of programs on topics such as workforce development, funding/financing projects, regulatory engagement, and policy.
  • Prepare written summaries of analysis and research for use at meetings, in reports and outreach materials, and/or for program development.
  • Use available sources to gather and analyze data on various topics including energy burden and energy use in the region’s housing stock.
  • Gather data and benchmark municipal facilities using available tools such as Energy Star Portfolio Manager and Excel spreadsheets.
  • Participate and support public meetings for the Regional Energy Center and the Climate Action Plan.
  • Actively participate in project meetings for projects and programs.

Qualifications

  • Interest and background or training in sustainable energy and/or climate change issues.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to perform independent research and gather data from reliable sources.
  • Strong quantitative skills. Experience in data analysis, coding and/or using ArcGIS Pro a plus.
  • Ability to work independently and be self-motivated.
  • Ability to prioritize work and multitask.
  • Proficiency in Google Suite is required.

Availability

Ability to start on June 3rd, 2025 is preferred. This is a hybrid, full-time position requiring a commitment of 37.5 hours per week.

Compensation

Interns currently pursuing or holding a Bachelor’s degree will be paid $17 per hour. Those currently pursuing or holding a Master’s degree will receive $20 per hour. Students with Work-Study funding are encouraged to apply.

Minimum Education and Training

Must have completed at least ONE YEAR of a college/university program or be enrolled in a master’s program, or an equivalent combination of experience and training, plus substantial experience, interest, or involvement in planning.
