Materials Scientist or Materials Engineer Internship at Medtronic Neuromodulation

Location(s): Fridley, MN and Brooklyn Center, MN

Duration: The internship is intended to run from late May/early June thru mid/late August 2025.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

This is a temporary position.

General Requirements:

Student must be local to Twin Cities area, the work is hands on in lab environments.

The student must have their own reliable transportation, this internship will require the intern to commute back and forth between two Medtronic facilities in Brooklyn Center and Fridley, MN.

Responsible for performing and supporting research for teams operating within a service group, or product group and/ or project group.

Assists with the development, monitoring, coordination and implementation of technical projects as assigned.

Provides analysis, reporting and internal communication services with team members.

Develops knowledge of industry and organizational processes.

Project Specific Details:

  • Perform experiment on different engineering materials and conducts hands on experiments, collect measurements, perform data analysis, and write technical reports.
  • Microstructure analysis and data collection.
  • Work with engineers to provide hands on materials handling and track samples.
  •  Assist in materials characterization for metals, ceramics, and polymers used in neuromodulation devices.
  •  Support materials processing activities including testing and optimizing fabrication methods.
  •  Contribute to mechanical testing to assess the strength and durability of device components.
  •  Help with surface analysis to evaluate material properties and performance.
  •  Participate in materials joining and bonding techniques for implantable devices.
  •  Assist with metallography to examine material structure and properties.
  •  Gain hands-on lab experience with non-destructive and destructive testing methods.
  •  Collaborate in electrical and mechanical testing to ensure device functionality and safety.
  •  Support development of next-generation implantable devices for neuromodulation therapies including Deep Brain Stimulation, Spinal Cord Stimulation, Sacral Nerve Modulation.
  • Participate in hands-on lab work, preparing samples, conducting experiments, and documenting results in accordance with regulatory standards.

Hours/Compensation: The position is intended to be 40 hrs/week.
