Management Consulted’s ‘Consulting Fit Score Sheet’

Management Consulted’s Consulting Fit Score Sheet is a self-assessment resource designed to help students decide whether management consulting may be a strong career fit. The guide walks students through the major traits consulting firms often look for, including education, relevant experience, analytical ability, business understanding, leadership, and distinction.

This resource is helpful for students who are curious about consulting but are not sure how competitive they may be as candidates or what areas they may need to strengthen before applying.

The guide focuses on two major areas of consulting fit:

Education fit

The score sheet explains that education is an important factor in consulting recruiting. Students are encouraged to assess their academic background using areas such as:

  • Whether they attend a target school
  • Whether their degree is relevant to business, economics, finance, or consulting-related work
  • Academic performance, including GPA
  • Honors, scholarships, fellowships, or merit awards
  • Leadership roles on campus or in academic settings

Students complete an Education Fit Score by rating areas such as school pedigree, degree relevance, GPA, honors, and leadership. The education section has a top score of 25, a mid score of 18, and a low score of 15 or below.

Experience fit

The guide also explains that not all experience carries the same weight in consulting recruiting. Students are encouraged to evaluate work, volunteer, externship, internship, and other experiences based on whether they demonstrate the type of thinking and skills consulting firms value.

The experience score sheet asks students to rate up to five experiences based on:

  • Brand name or reputation of the organization
  • Analytical ability demonstrated
  • Business understanding developed or shown
  • Distinction, awards, promotions, return offers, or other achievements

The guide explains that strong experiences are those that show clear personal impact, analytical thinking, business judgment, and achievement. The Experience Fit Score has a top score of 100, a mid score of 70, and a low score of 50 or below.

Consulting fit score

After completing the education and experience sections, students combine their scores to calculate an overall Consulting Fit Score. The score is meant to help students understand both how strong their current consulting profile is and which areas may need improvement.

Fit Guide:

  • 120–125: Outstanding fit for management consulting. Students may be ready to apply to top firms, prepare resumes and cover letters, and begin practicing case interviews.
  • 100–119: Very good fit. Students may be strong candidates but should invest time in networking and interview preparation.
  • 80–99: Possible fit, but students may need to build stronger experience, improve weak areas, and make a more focused plan.
  • Under 80: Students may need a longer-term plan to build relevant experience, improve weak areas, and develop stronger networking contacts.

Action planning

The guide also includes an action plan section to help students identify weak areas and create specific next steps. Example areas for improvement include:

  • Attending a non-target school
  • Low GPA
  • Less relevant degree
  • Lack of leadership examples
  • Lack of distinctions or awards
  • Low analytical experience
  • Weak business understanding
  • Too little relevant experience

Students are encouraged to create focused action steps with timelines, such as pursuing tutoring, joining business-focused clubs, starting a consulting club, applying for fellowships, selecting analytical projects, networking for internships, or gaining experience at brand-name organizations.

Students can use this score sheet to honestly evaluate their current consulting profile, identify strengths, spot gaps, and build a plan to become a stronger candidate for consulting internships or full-time roles.
