The Senior Accountant is responsible for assisting in the management of the day-to-day operations of the business/accounting office with a staff of eight. This position reports directly to the Controller
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
●Performs various account analyses; prepares and posts journal entries or budget transfers to correct deficiencies
●Responsible for analyzing financial information to recommend and/or develop efficient use of resources and procedures
●Responsible for the recording, classifying, and summarizing financial transactions in accordance with GAAP
●Responsible for the reconciliation of the financial activity of school food service program monthly and monitor operations as required
●Assists in the management of all federal, state, and local grants
●Assists with the monthly closing and prepare monthly financial statements
●Assists with the annual year-end audit process and provides the outside auditing firm with documentation, reports, and analyses as required
●Monitors activity to ensure account codes are in compliance with the state mandated uniform chart of accounts (UCOA)
●Assists with procedural and process changes including training of applicable staff
●Ability to perform other accounting duties assigned by the Chief Financial Officer to Controller in order to meet the specific needs of the Pawtucket School Department and ensuring the efficient operation of the Business office
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
●Professional financial position that requires a thorough knowledge of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles), computerized accounting systems and the application of the general ledger as they apply to fund accounting in a non-profit environment
●Working knowledge of budget development, accounting and reporting expenditures of all federal, state and local awards
●Proven experience in maintaining confidentiality
●Proven experience in organizational and leaderships skills with an emphasis to detail, consistency, and accuracy
●Ability to develop policy documents and procedure manuals
●Skilled in working with complex data, utilizing formulas, functions and import tools.
●Proven experience communicating effectively, both orally and in writing with governmental, state and local agencies and vendors
●Proven experience in decision making using independent judgment and initiative to resolve problems in a timely manner
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
●Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting
●Three (3) plus years’ experience with municipal, non-profit, and/or fund accounting
●Proficient in MS Office and Excel
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
●Experience with RI Department of Education’s Uniform Chart of Accounts
●Exposure to database and systems administration
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:
●Frequently required to stand, sit and walk
●Occasional lifting or carrying weighing up to 25 pounds
●The working conditions (light, noise level, temperature, etc. are typical of (primarily) an office setting although the employee may be exposed to adverse weather conditions related to visits to school buildings or other locations
●Specific physical abilities include close vision and the ability to use computer monitors for long periods of time, as well as the ability to communicate verbally in person and on the telephone.
